The Ultimate Guide to Laminated Glass

What is laminated glass?

Laminated glass is a safety glass that is made up of two layers of glass or more layers of glass that are bonded together with an interlayer. The interlayer can be polyvinyl butyral (PVB interlayer), ethylene-vinyl acetate (EVA), or SGP interlayer (SentryGlas by Kuraray). It is called VSG in some EU countries.

What are the similarities and differences between the laminated and tempered glass?

Similarities:

  • they are both of standard safety glass.
  • they both can be used for safety applications, preventing forced entry, natural disasters, and human impact.
  • they both have high strength than annealed glass.

Differences:

  • tempered glass is a single piece, while VSG is two layers or multiple layers.
  • laminate glass’s vinyl interlayer filters UV rays, toughened glasses are more impact-resistant.
  • tempered glass is made through a tempering furnace, in the tempering process, the glass will be heated first and then cooled rapidly. VSG is made of two pieces of glass or multi-layers of glass, combined by a special plastic layer.
  • when broken, tempered glass shatters into obtuse particles, while laminated glass fragments will be bigger and similar to annealed glass.

What kind of laminated safety glass can we get?

Annealed laminated glass, heat-strengthened/semi-tempered VSG, fully tempered and laminated glass.

Benefits of laminated glass

-Durability: it has a much shorter lifespan than non-laminated.

-Safety: it is often six to eight times stronger than regular glass and can withstand extreme force.

-Sound barrier: The noise of the outside world cannot come through the glass, so the household sound is not disturbed.

-Keep out UV light: laminated glass windows can filter over 99.9% of UV rays into the room.

-Security: it is virtually impossible to break into, which makes it a perfect option for those who want to maintain a certain level of privacy.

Disadvantages of laminated glass

-Weight: it is heavier than standard glass, so it needs to be used in areas where it can support the extra weight.

-Cost: it is more expensive than standard glass, so it may not be a practical option for all applications.

-Fragility: Laminated glass is still fragile and can break if not handled properly.

-Worse Feasibility: it has to be pre cut to the ideal size since it is not easy after lamination.

Is laminated glass good to use?

YES.

It is a great option for many different applications.

It is durable, tough, and long-lasting, and can reduce the effects of winds, earthquakes, and impacts from outside.

It is also aesthetically pleasing and can be personalized to suit your needs.

It provides sound-proof function, safety & security.

It is the best glass to protect your furniture from UV rays.

Which is better, laminated glass or toughened glass?

Both laminated and tempered glass have their own advantages and disadvantages.

VSG is a great sound barrier, can be used to keep out UV light, and is more difficult to break into than tempered glass. However, it is more fragile than tempered glass and is also heavier.

Tempered glass is less expensive and is less likely to shatter on impact, but it does not offer as much noise insulation or privacy protection.

VSG is more expensive to replace if it gets damaged, but it is stronger and more difficult to break into. Tempered glass is less expensive, but it doesn’t offer the same level of security as VSG.

What is the cost of laminated glass?

The minimum cost of 3mm clear glass+0.38mm+3mm clear glass is US $10~$12/sqm.

The cost varies big with different compositions and thicknesses.

  1. Glass thickness: 8mm+8mm is two to three times expensive than 4mm+4mm.
  2. Different PVB layer: there is a big price gap between 0.38mm & 1.52mm interlayer.
  3. Heat-treated: annealed glass, heat-strengthened and tempered glass varies big.
  4. Other factors: glass yielding rates, shaped glass, glass with holes, etc.

Can laminated glass be cut?

Yes, annealed laminated glass can be cut to size. The glass needs to be cut while it is still in the lamination film, and special tools and techniques are required.

Semi tempered glass laminated glass and fully tempered laminated safety glass cannot be cut again.

Does laminated glass noise-proof?

Yes, it is an effective noise-proofing material.

However, it cannot be used as a noise-proof glass. It can be only regarded as noise-proof glass with acoustic PVB interlayers.

What type of glass is suitable for laminated glass windows, canopy, and roofs?

Some of the most common types that can be used for these applications include:

-Heat-strengthened/semi-tempered laminated glass

-Fully toughened laminated glass

-SentryGlas with SGP interlayer from Kuraray

Where are the laminated glass products used for?

-laminated tempered glass windows

-safety glass doors

-glass floors

-glass facades

-glass canopy

-glass sandwich doors

-glass stair treads

-glass windshield

-glass skylights

-tempered glass laminated mirror

-other architectural glass applications

Does laminated glass reduce heat and glare?

It does reduce heat and glare, but it also blocks ultraviolet light. This makes it a good choice for applications where you need protection from the sun’s harmful rays.

Is laminated glass as good as double glazing?

VSG is not as good as double glazing, but it is a good alternative for applications where double glazing is not possible or not desired.

Double glazing creates an insulating barrier that helps to keep heat in or out of a building, depending on the season. VSG can also be effective at reducing noise and glare, but it doesn’t offer the same level of insulation as double glazing.

What is Sentry laminated glass? And where SentryGlas can be used?

SentryGlas is a combination of safety glasses and DuPont ionoplast interlayer.

As the only structural safety glass in the industry, it is widely used for hurricane windows, doors, balustrades, stair treads, canopies, giant curtain walling, edge exposed places, etc.

Where can we contact a certified SentryGlas supplier in China?

There are 57 certified SentryGlas process manufacturers in China mainland with Kuraray registered trademark. Kindly contact us through email or phone for the processor list.

What are the main properties of laminated glass?

-Durability

-Safety

-Security

-Design flexibility

-UV control

-Solar control

How strong is laminated glass?

Laminated glass is very strong and can resist a lot of pressure.

Broken glass will stick to the interlayers even after breakage, which helps to reduce the risk of injury.

It can withstand a lot of pressure and is less likely to break than annealed glass.

Is laminated glass energy efficient?

Laminated glass is often seen as an energy-efficient option for windows and doors.

This is because it can help to reduce the amount of heat that is lost in colder climates.

It also helps to reduce the amount of noise that comes in from outside, making it a good option for windows in noisy areas.

Is laminated glass impact resistant?

Laminated glass is not designed to withstand impact resistance. There is impact resistant function with thicker PVB layers or SentryGlas SGP interlayer.

Laminated glass is less likely to break than regular glass, making it a good option for windows and doors.

Is laminated glass more secure than tempered glass?

Laminated glass is more secure than tempered glass.

With outside impact, the tempered glass breaks into particles and falls down. However, laminated glass will stick to the interlayers even after broken.

Does laminated glass need a kitemark?

It depends on the client. We propose to print a kitemark on laminated glass.

The kitemark serves as an indicator for the customer.

It acts as a traceable remark to the manufacturer if the glass is broken.

What is semi-tempered laminated glass?

It is a type of safety glass that consists of two or more pieces of semi-tempered glass/heat-strengthened glass and is combined with an interlayer.

Is semi-tempered laminated better than tempered and laminated glass?

Semi-tempered laminated glass is thought to be a better option than tempered laminated glass. It is stronger and more resistant to breaking.

What are the safety glass standards of laminated glass and what certificates do you have?

Different continents have different safety glass standards:

USA Standard: ASTM C 1172, SGCC certificate

EN standard: EN 12543, CE certificate

Australia & New Zealand: AS 2208, AS & NZS 2208 certificate

Chinese standard: GB15763, CCC certificate
